ARIES-SCORPIO Relationship

ARIES-SCORPIO Relationship

Deep down, Aries men and women like to think of themselves as colorful, fierce pirates. Pirates are, after all, intrepid, romantic, and reckless. But like the pirate crew in Neverland, Aries often waste Mars’ energy in premature emotional reactions and defensiveness. The Ram never attacks unless attacked first. Remember that Aries is the symbolic newborn of the Zodiac, and newborns only scream when they are not being paid attention to, or when someone jabs them with a sharp safety pin. After all, it is the only defense they have against pain or neglect. When a greater danger threatens, Mars, their guardian, rushes to the rescue. Scorpios, however, are masters of the offensive—an offensive woven with clever, cool strategy, exquisite patience, and an uncanny awareness of others’ weaknesses. You won’t find any Scorpions running wild, darting about or charging aimlessly. When Scorpios charge, they aim straight for the target, with deadly precision. When a Scorpion’s tail stings them, they know they’ve been stung. That’s why it’s rare for people to encounter Pluto’s might a second time. Usually once is enough.

Likewise, it’s almost impossible to feel sorry for Scorpios (although showing compassion to a Scorpio is almost like lending a dollar to the oil czars of the Middle East). It must be exhausting to see people startle when they find out you were born in November. An Aries friend of mine has a trusted secretary whom he had always thought to be the most charming and efficient woman in the world. Until one day he discovered by chance that she was a Scorpio. He nearly had a breakdown. It was as if he had been harboring a snake in his office. His loyal secretary… a Scorpio? Mars’ normal courage went out the window when the Ram reacted to this alarming astrological blow. When he calmed down, he remembered the tenacity with which the lady had worked for years; her exceptional courage, greater than duty dictated; her efficient composure in times of emergency… and, yes, her sometimes cruel tongue. Now, if you have any knowledge of astrology, you know that this is not the typical reaction of an Aries boss. Nor any other Aries. Rams do not back down from anyone. Curiously, under normal conditions the Ram does not immediately lash out at a Scorpio, as he would at those born under all the other Sun signs. There is something in those captivating Pluto eyes, where calm poise and hidden strength are reflected, that sends a message to the Ram: “Be careful. This still water is very deep. And you could drown in it. You are only a paper Ram, and the Ram belongs to the family of sheep. You are not in your element with me. You are now in the vast ocean, which more than covers you, full of sharks, seaweed, strange night creatures, dark reefs and mysteries.”

That’s where all Scorpios originally came from: the sea. If they are also found in the desert these days, the burning sands are no stranger territory to the Rams. Aries instinctively absorbs the message, which says: “danger.” Ah, DANGER! This is the only word that will spur the Ram into action, so the Mars charge to meet the challenge soon replaces caution. This is almost always a mistake. When it comes to a real duel, the Ram is more resilient, thunderous, and emphatic than the Scorpio. But when things come to that, the typical Scorpio simply disappears, shrouded in haughty silence, and Aries is left pondering the same old puzzle. Did he (or she) leave because he admitted defeat… or because I exaggerated? In other words, even if it seems to you that you have triumphed over a Scorpio, you will never know for sure. They will always have to make guesses. The average Ram doesn’t need many experiences to learn that the best way to deal with a Scorpio is to cooperate with him… at a safe and respectful emotional distance. The intimacies of romance are another matter.

Here we are referring to the general vibrations of this 6-8 Sun Sign Pattern between Aries and Scorpio in business, friendship, or family relationships. The examples of Aries-Scorpio interaction are always valid, whatever the sex and age of the Ram and Eagle involved, and therefore what follows can be appropriately and profitably applied to any Mars-Pluto partnership in which the reader is involved, by the simple procedure of changing the names and the specific situation. The basic elements remain the same. In the company of a Pluto-ruled person, Aries should not expect to encounter the fairness of Libra, the compassion of Pisces, or the warm generosity of Leo. He may even encounter a basic selfishness greater than that of Capricorn, if not that of Aries himself. But Scorpio is immensely loyal, and never compromises on matters of principle. This fascinates the Ram, who is also fiercely loyal, and equally despises compromise in matters of ideals or integrity. Scorpio never capitulates, never admits defeat. Aries is also vehemently dedicated to triumph. Only cowards capitulate and give up. Everyone knows it. These two certainly do.

However, there is another quality of Scorpio, intangible, indefinable, which Aries cannot fathom. Is it willpower? Or simply… willpower? It is the latter, and it is responsible for the compact, emotionally charged aura that surrounds even the most calm and seemingly harmless Scorpios. Now, this does not mean that every Scorpio must behave like Dracula. Many of these men and women have an undeniably sweet and affable personality. They are interesting, intelligent and courteous. But they are not shy, insecure and defenseless… and Aries should not be fooled by their calm voices, their discreet demeanor and their lack of outward aggressiveness. In this partnership, it is wise to always remember that the elements of Fire and Water are combinable, and that each of them is capable of destroying the other. I know a Scorpio man who married a Scorpio girl after a long (and of course, secret) engagement. When the first child was born in April, my initial impulse was to offer to adopt him. A little Ram, under the restrictive domination of two Scorpios? The little one must be rescued, I told myself, before his Mars ego is completely crushed. But the fact is that the calm discipline and intuitive wisdom of his two Pluto-ruled parents have benefited the Aries tremendously. A pair of evolved and enlightened Eagles provides an excellent example of moral courage and personal integrity for a Mars-ruled youngster who needs and wants to be guided in the right direction.

Scorpios are perfect teachers of willpower and stability for an explosive Ram, who tends to explode in a burst of enthusiasm, then lose interest before the sparks have settled. Of course, there is always the danger that Pluto’s power over Mars will be too harsh. The caution of Scorpio’s Water element can placate a Ram of any age and turn him into an abnormally introverted and shy Aries-type of Sheep, which is frankly undesirable because it means denying the innate personality of Mars. However, in the happiest Aries-Scorpio partnerships, the Ram will respond wonderfully to the strength of the Eagle friend, neighbor, relative, partner, lover or consort, and will try to imitate Pluto’s poise, so that the combination will have a positive outcome. Likewise, the Scorpio half of the couple will try to develop a greater flexibility of judgment, in relation to the more open idiosyncrasy of the Ram, and with his much freer and more cordial approach to life. The emotional coldness that Scorpio can project at times is capable of destroying the warm heart of Aries, as well as his spirit and self-confidence.

There will be passing moments when Scorpio’s piercing glance of angry disapproval, or his miscarried will, will terrify the Aries, and send a shudder down the spine of the Ram, even if he is ruled by Mars. I know a Scorpio father who, when he could no longer argue because he was frustrated by the stubbornness of his three children (one of whom was an Aries), would sink into stony silence for a few seconds, and then utter, in a sepulchral voice, the ominous words of Pluto: I will remember this. It will be healthy for all Rams associated with Scorpios to remember that. So the Eagle will never forget a wrong. Ever. Nor will the Scorpio man, woman or child forget a token of love or kindness. He will live much safer and happier who leaves them a reminder of the latter, and avoid leaving them with the former whenever possible. Some Scorpios become slaves of their own will. So much so that the Eagle will persevere in his undertaking even after having evidence that the path he is on will lead him irremediably to self-destruction.

Aries understands this kind of vehement, regrettable compulsion very well. But Aries is a positive Fire sign: the reckless, Mars-ruled crusader who is emotionally stimulated by dedication to a cause and the excitement of a dangerous mission. Scorpio is a negative Water sign: the seasoned veteran, who has a deep understanding of realities and the strength to endure hardship, and who harbors no illusions about the appeal of marching bands, uniforms, and decorations for heroism. Their strategies are very different. Aries defends fiercely, in the vanguard. Scorpio attacks suddenly, unexpectedly, from the rear. In war, these two Sun signs are natural enemies. Peace is best—and it begins with love.
