ARIES-LIBRA Relationship

ARIES-LIBRA Relationship

Do reckless Rams envy the wonderful tranquility enjoyed by Venus-ruled people when Libra’s scales are perfectly balanced, as they sometimes are? No. Rams do not envy Libra’s tranquility, although astrology insists that they should, because the two Sun signs are situated at opposite ends of the karmic wheel of life, and therefore each lacks what the other has. At least the typical Aries will never openly confess to envying Libra, although secretly Rams would like to imitate Libra’s beautiful, placid, calm balance. The word “balance” is a derivative of the word “libra.” Or vice versa, the word “libra” is a derivative of the word “equilibrium.” Either way, the word and the Sun sign are associated. To a Libra, nothing is more important than balance. They hate to lose it. Yet they often lose it. One of the times the Ram secretly envies the Libra is when an Aries person makes a sudden, Martian-like decision and is then forced to face the inevitable antagonistic, Libra-like emotional trauma that always ensues. Did I do right or wrong? Should I have said “yes” or “no”?

Believe me, Aries’ after-the-fact indecision is far more painful than Libra’s a priori indecision – and certainly less constructive. No one can be more likeable, intelligent and optimistic than Libras who have their scales under control. They are simply great at getting human groups to blend harmoniously and at easing tensions (when they are not personally involved). Aries men and women admire and respect Libras for these Venusian virtues that they themselves lack. But Aries is also the opposite Sun sign to Libra, and so Libras must also admire and respect Martian virtues. Doesn’t this sound like an order? One of the most notable differences between Aries and Libra is that the simplest Aries request sounds, who knows why, like an imposition. Even when the Rams ask a question, you often feel that they are not questioning you but ordering you. On the other hand (we must be careful to look at the obverse and reverse of the problem, since we are dealing with the scales)… on the other hand, when Venus-ruled Libras ask a question, they manage to captivate you and make you forget your common sense, leaving you vulnerable and defenseless. It matters little whether the Libra asks, “Why are you always so ignorant, darling?” or comments, “What you do reveals your complete lack of education”… either way, it will evoke a musical tone with saccharine reminiscences.

Those Venusian voices, soft as the fluff on a rabbit’s tail, conjure up images of syrup poured into bowls of honey. This is why Libra can argue for hours with Aries and leave the impression that the Ram has been intolerably rude and stubborn, in opposition to Libra’s gentle, sensible logic. And what is this, if not an injustice? It is not unusual for Libras to become fabulous lawyers, the kind who win every oral argument before the jury in the courtroom. If a Libra lawyer can have his way with a ruthless judge and can win over an indifferent jury, imagine what happens in a contest of wits between Libra and the impulsive, irritable, emotional Ram. There is no contest. Perhaps Libra will accuse the Rams of being too hasty and incapable of making a sound judgment, of charging headlong without thinking of the consequences… and then remind them how beautiful the symbol of Justice is with its perfectly balanced Scales. ARIES: Yes, but if their eyes are covered, how can they distinguish right from wrong? LIBRA: They wear the blindfold only to protect themselves from prejudice, darling.

Aries may then ask Libra if he knows the fable about the donkey who died of hunger because, placed between two fields of clover, he could not decide which to graze on first. Finally, the Libra man or woman will smile… and when the Ram is under the influence of Venus’s glittering aura, the Aries fire goes out with a final crackle. Frank and friendly Rams find it difficult to resist a smile and a kind word, and they are too naive to suspect that Libra uses seduction as a weapon against them. Yet this is what Libra does. In this relationship, Libra will almost always remain calm and balanced. But when Aries’ aggressiveness becomes intolerable, it will probably produce in this usually affable person the same effect that the accumulation of tension produces in the sky: a thunderstorm. All of Libra’s instincts shy away from unpleasant confrontation, but when he (or she) feels seriously threatened, he will react strongly, sometimes even impulsively, if only in order to regain his cool. This may seem a bit confusing, but if you want to figure it out, you’ll have to apply Libran logic. The best I can do is say that, from a Libran’s point of view, the end always justifies the means. At least in this, he’ll have the approval of most Rams.

In fact, with the respect always due to one’s opposite Sun sign, Rams will grudgingly admire Libra’s discernment and secretly wish they had it. Aries knows Libra is fair and logical and thinks clearly. The Aries man or woman knows that Libra’s decisions are almost always correct, but the Ram can get a little nervous as he watches Libra make them. The very word “decision” makes most Libras itch. Aries are indifferent. A decision to make? Fine. You toss a coin or a pen—or you just do what feels instinctively right, and then forget about it. That’s the Aries motto. Dive right in. (If there’s no water in the pool, Rams will skin their chins on the concrete, but they can simply apply a bandage and then be on their way with gusto.) It’s not that Aries doesn’t grasp the potential value of the pleasant, safe “middle path” that Libra wears down into a ditch, but the Ram actually prefers to take the occasional risk down the right path or the left fork—to see what happens. It’s exciting. And this (let’s look at the other side of the story) is one of the qualities Libra admires in the opposite Sun sign, Aries. In both cases, the effect is the same.

If you want to gauge a person’s astrological knowledge, ask them which of these two Sun signs has the more violent temper. Before you jump to conclusions, think about it. Libra is Air and Aries is Fire. Fire seems more volatile and violent than Air, but among the three Air signs, Libra is the cardinal sign… and cardinal means “leader,” among other things. Aries is also cardinal, but you must remember that in Nature, air is not as innocent an element as it seems, when it becomes aggressive. Have you ever witnessed a pleasant, calm, “non-violent” tornado, cyclone or hurricane? The calm vapor, composed of moist “air,” that comes out of the spout of a teapot can transform into a force powerful enough to rip up the ground for miles around. Consider also that the main component of air is nitrogen. Nitrogen may be an inert gas, but it is the main reason why explosives go off. So… who has the more dangerous temper, Aries or Libra? You decide. I didn’t ask which one is the loudest when angry. I asked which one is the most dangerous. If you study this paragraph carefully, you’ll understand why people are puzzled when most astrology books, when referring to the fact that Venus rules Libra, describe all Libras as peaceful, gentle, beautiful, sweet, and serene individuals. They are all of these things… half the time. And I suppose I must confess that Aries would benefit from trying to imitate some of these positive traits of the Libra personality.

Sometimes these two will argue instinctively, but to be fair, when a conflict breaks out between a Libra and a Ram, the former’s aim (usually) is to win and eventually achieve the rule of peace and justice. The Arians’ aim in most disputes is (usually) to win and prove themselves right (even if they are wrong) in order to satisfy Mars’ considerable ego. An Aries-Libra partnership, influenced by the 7-7 Sun sign configuration, is in most cases a fortunate experience for both. But if there is a negative Sun-Moon aspect between their horoscopes, there may be some fiery and windy periods of tension and conflict. With a harmonious astral exchange, Libra will provide a rich atmosphere of freedom of thought and action that will nourish the Rams’ self-confidence. Typically, the typical Libra will treat Aries with gentleness, rarely with despotism or harsh words… and this is an ideal attitude to bring out the best in the Martian nature, to make the Ram’s most valuable qualities flourish. Rather than trying to impose a certain pattern of behavior on Aries, Libra will very often recognize Aries’ individuality and respect it.

Driven by the natural instinct to imitate the opposite Sun sign, the Ram will often find that the relationship with a Libra friend, relative, partner, lover or consort allows him to retain the Martian courage and impetus intact, but mitigated and adapted to a more tolerant and balanced pattern, the Venus pattern. Conversely, the Libra man, woman or child will find that in the presence of the Martian friend, relative, partner, lover or consort his hesitation gradually changes into a firmer decision, inspired by Arian ambition to higher goals, both in the personal and public spheres. As happens with all 7-7 vibrations, the Ram must try to understand that Libra feels a very specific need to conserve his energy and not waste it unjustifiably, just as Aries often feels driven to waste Martian energy. This is how Libra maintains its physical and emotional balance, and its behavior should not be attributed to laziness. When the Ram sincerely tries to see both sides of any situation that arises between the two, and makes a genuine effort to understand Libra’s Venusian idiosyncrasies, the Libra man or woman will return the favor with much affection and cheerful encouragement, which will lift Aries’ spirits considerably.

Libras much prefer to be cheerful and good-natured rather than moody and argumentative, provided Aries plays fair with them. Someone once remarked that Libras are living, breathing proof of reincarnation, because no one could make themselves so “impossible” in one lifetime. State this theory to a Libra and they will reply, “Oh, I’ve heard that about Aries, but not Libra. Isn’t the symbol for Libra the scales of Justice and Truth? I don’t see anything impossible about trying to be reasonable. On the other hand, Aries is a very unreasonable sign, and I think…” At this point, a smart Ram will offer the Libra man or woman a piece, be all smiles and sweetness again (Libras love sweets), and the argument will be over. So much the better, because the Ram couldn’t have won it anyway. Besides, in the long run it’s usually better to lose an argument with a Libra, because Venus’s judgment is almost always correct. After weighing and measuring and balancing it—and arguing and debating it—so endlessly, of course it must be.
