ARIES-LEO Relationship

ARIES-LEO Relationship

Most people know that Leo is symbolized by the Lion. As for the Arian Rams, once they (Leo) have been taught the peaceful joys of submission, they become perfect lambs. Now, the Bible hints that when “the lamb dwells with the lion” we should expect either the end of the world… or a thousand years of peace. Theologians and metaphysicians argue whether the prophecy will have a happy or tragic ending. Perhaps there is a bit of both. That is the case in most cases. Let us hope, however, that the lamb dwelling with the lion will bring permanent peace and not the Götterdämmerung (end of the world). Of course, one could argue that a truce in the fighting between these two would seem like the end of the world. A docile, sleepy relationship between them would imply the concrete end… of something. Perhaps it’s because of how much fun they have inciting each other to race to the finish line, and competing for the acclaim of the lesser animals. Rams are winners. Unquestionably so. Their primary occupation is to win. It says so on their resumes. Occupation: WINNING! Whatever the game—love, friendship, business, or family life—they will win at it. This puts Aries at the top. Leos don’t waste their valuable time striving to win at something. They don’t need to compete. They are born superior to everyone else, and they are clearly the top dog in any competition in love, business, friendship, or family. This also puts Leo at the top—with much less effort and energy. The question is, will there be room at the top?

Well, yes… in a vast stadium with plenty of capacity, each of them could claim a share of the spotlight and the comforting rounds of applause. But in a smaller setting, such as that provided by an office, a classroom, an apartment or a house… they could be a little crowded. Something needs to give. Namely, the outsized ego of one of the two. I won’t beat around the bush or be tactful. The message will hurt less if it is direct and quick. It is the ego of the Ram that must bend and surrender to the majesty of Leo, because the Lion and the Lioness are born to lead, they are born to command, they are born to be first… THEY ARE BORN FREE! That is, free from the domination of anyone, including the government, the tax collectors, the astrologers… and especially the aggressive Rams. The Aries who makes up half of this team will have to be content with knowing that he or she can battle any of the other Sun signs and win—well, maybe not Scorpio. But all is not lost. (Aries believes that nothing is ever lost, only temporarily lost.) When I said that Aries cannot triumph over Leo, I meant it in the sense of winning trophies in front of an audience. In private, the Ram can win virtually any tournament against the Big Cat, if only he listens respectfully to the Lion’s long lectures, showering him with flattery—and keeping his personal intentions and opinions to himself. The first part is easy. Aries loves to lift people’s spirits and lavishly praise anyone who stimulates Mars’s admiration for power and strength (two elements Leo has in abundance). Most Rams, however, find it difficult to keep quiet about their ultimate goals.

Aries like to brag when they win an election, a doll at an amusement park, or an argument. There is an excess of boasting in this double Sun Sign combination, and the feline half of the team may retreat with wounded dignity when it becomes apparent that he (or she) is being manipulated or upstaged, both of which break his pride. It is no coincidence that a group of lions is technically called a pride in English. If a Lion or Lioness finds himself in a position where he cannot walk away with his wounded dignity (for example, if he is a minor or a legal spouse), he will sit sulking in a corner, looking on with a sad, reproachful expression while stroking his vanity. There is also always the possibility that Leo will roar like the MGM Lion and fiercely denounce the injustice perpetrated by a mere commoner. This can be tremendously loud. The Ram will be safer if he lets the Leo of either sex think that he has won the game that the two may have been playing. No one, in or out of the jungle, can be as magnanimous, cheerful and just plain huggable as a Leo who has been flattered emotionally and physically. However, the Aries is not at all noted for his talent for flattery. In his fables, Aesop points out how easily a lesser animal, the jackal, can manipulate the Lion. When the Lion becomes enraged with him and roars angrily, the cunning jackal effortlessly wins back the ruler’s goodwill. He only has to remind the Lion, in the height of his rage, that he is the King of the Jungle, the Monarch of All Beasts, and therefore should not expect too much from a vile jackal. This is as effective as a spell.

The problem is that the Ram is not a jackal. Aries is more likely to order Leo, at the height of battle (and there will be battles!), to surrender… or leave. This will immediately create an emotional no-win situation. Since it is absolutely impossible for a Leo to surrender… and since leaving is an act of cowardice, unworthy of a monarch (what true king ever retires?), the Lion or Lioness has no choice but to roar louder, with increasing arrogance. Finally, when Aries discovers that even the hard horns of a Ram are no match for the Lion’s splendid courage and vigor (emotional, mental, and physical), all will be over except the ranting, which can go on for an exhausting amount of time, because these two Sun Signs are quite fond of theatrical posturing and speeches. “How dare you!” “Don’t raise your voice at me!” “Don’t give me orders!” “You won’t get your way!” “I won’t do what you say!” “Oh, of course you will!” “This has gone on long enough!” “Do you know who you’ve messed with?” “You’ll do what I say!” “Never! Do you hear me? NEVER!” This goes on…and on…and on. If they sold tickets, there would be a sellout crowd. No play on or off Broadway has the dramatic impact, suspense and action that these two manage to inject into each act of their ego-theatrics…and the ending inevitably calls for an encore. I know an Aries-Leo couple who take turns turning up the volume on their music to break up their turbulent sessions.

However, although Leo must ultimately triumph, this Sun Sign is not a fearsome conqueror, ready to seize the spoils of war and crush the vanquished under his boots. Both Lions and Lionesses are noted for their generosity and the nobility of their attitude toward the defeated. Of course, it must be admitted that Rams are not good losers. But if there is a chance that Aries will ever lose gracefully, it will be in a showdown with a Leo. These Sun Signs are astrologically trine (harmonious) and are influenced by the magical Sun Sign Configuration 5-9 (see the Sun Sign Configurations section at the end of this book). Consequently, each senses the superior qualities of the other when compared to those of any person known. Since they rarely fail to experience genuine admiration for each other, when peace is made and armistice is signed, it is often filled with oaths. These Sun Signs are astrologically trine (harmonious) and are influenced by the magical 5-9 Sun Sign Configuration (see the Sun Sign Configurations section at the end of this book). Consequently, they each intuit the superior qualities of the other when compared to those of anyone they know. Since they rarely fail to experience genuine admiration for each other, when peace is made and armistice signed, it is often filled with (dramatic, of course) oaths of eternal loyalty and devotion. Until the next battle. Then it all begins again. In the family circle, in the classroom or office, or between lovers or legal spouses, the relationship can be tender and happy, provided Aries is willing to accept Leo as a guide, preceptor, counselor, or teacher—and provided Leo continues to envelop Aries in the comfortable warmth of that loving benevolence and protection that those ruled by the Sun can so naturally provide. Overall, this will be a fortunate, though not always smooth, partnership, because the Aries-Leo relationship is graced by the magical vibration of the 5-9 Sun Sign Configuration.

Leo will provide a plethora of sincere and extravagant praise, which Aries needs like flowers need rain. And vice versa. Quite the opposite. Aries and Leo don’t just seek esteem, they demand it peremptorily. If one of them has a Moon or Ascendant sign in adverse aspect, their quarrels are likely to be more cruel and insulting. Even then, however, the final outcome is usually an act of magnanimity. One source of friction will be those long, knowing Leo lectures that often begin with the phrase, “Now listen to me, and I’ll explain how wrong you are.” Since the Ram has enough trouble dealing with other authoritarian people in his daily life, the obligation to endure the same sermon every night at dinner time may inflame the very short fuse of Martian anger… But I’ll let you in on a secret. In fact, Aries will privately give Leo a lot of credit, and will genuinely respect—far more than they let on—the advice that Leo so often and so lavishly gives. Perhaps this is explained by the fact that the advice a Leo gives an Aries is so often tempered by sincere affection and consideration. Rams are in desperate need of loving guidance, and there is a better than average chance that they will get it from the Lion—or Lioness. As long as it is distinctly “loving” and not arrogantly overbearing.

If only the Ram could learn to ask Leo to do things, rather than order him to do them—”Do it now, no question about it”—the relationship between the two would be more peaceful. No one gives such orders to monarchs, not even prime ministers. The Mars-ruled Ram will have to make great efforts to behave more politely when he wants Leo to do something, but it will be worth his while, because otherwise the struggle for hegemony will degenerate into a permanent feud. When they treat each other with mutual consideration, this can be a unique and extraordinary relationship, because Leo senses the insecurities and dependence that lurk behind Aries’s spectacular and courageous personality, and knows that the Ram’s façade of certainty is not backed up by inner conviction—while Aries will grow accustomed to depending on Leo, who will bring not only his well-organized mind and poise in stormy hours, but also the ability of his sunny nature to impart warmth and meaning to every moment of life. The Ram knows that Leo’s heart is actually tremulous and sensitive, even though it hides behind a mask of superiority and boastfulness. There is a great natural rapport between these two, which is obvious when they smile at each other. It is a strangely intimate smile, a knowing smile that says, “Thank you for understanding me… I understand you too.”

Aries and Leo will find in each other the excitement they are constantly seeking. Both have essentially dynamic personalities, driven by the desire to live life to the full, without missing out on anything. They know that the stars are riotous, like a field of daisies, in the heights, beyond the trivial and mundane. And although their goals may differ, unless one of them was born with the Moon or the Ascendant in a sign of greater financial caution, such as Cancer, Scorpio or one of the three Earth signs, both will be in favour of arriving at their destination by travelling first class, not only in the material sense but in all the others. It may take careful thought to understand this. We can accept the world that others created or imagine a new world. Aries and Leo would prefer to materialise a new one with their imagination, perhaps similar to the ones they dreamed of as children. Maybe this is it, they mutter when they meet. Or at least the germ of that new world. No one knows where it will lead… but it won’t be boring.
