As the ruling planet of Aries and Scorpio, Mars signifies activation, initiation, taking action, and going after what we desire. That’s Mars, the God of War, the one who fights relentlessly for what he wants, regardless of the consequences. Of course, it depends on its placement in our birth chart: a favored Mars won’t be the same as one that isn’t. Regardless, being aware of our astrological possibilities offers the opportunity to transform ourselves and choose the best path to follow in our evolution.
Traditional astrology called Mars ‘malefic’ because of its unbeneficial qualities, as it destroyed everything in its path; it was anything but constructive. In the birth chart, having Mars in exile or fall, or in a water house, was synonymous with being condemned to be unable to make decisions or take action. Back then, this was what the guiding astrologer communicated to us to make us aware of our energies by warning us of what might happen to us, since knowledge is power, and it was considered fundamental and vital to be aware of our qualities.

These days, we might sugarcoat things a bit and sometimes take everything as if it were necessarily positive and opportune. But we agree that if we work on our own destiny, we are no longer condemned to a fate, but rather able to act in order to control it instead of it controlling us.
Mars is a personal planet and plays a very important role, as it works alongside Venus and Mercury to give direction to our solar identity and channel our lunar unconscious. The Martian function connects us to how we activate our desires. It’s the action and drive we put forth when we make decisions, when we want something, when we need to speak or express our emotions. Connecting with this energy requires stepping outside of the mind and reason to delve into our inner fire. A good balance between mind and drive is an excellent combination for desiring and achieving, because otherwise, an imbalance can lead us to realize too late that every action has a reaction, a consequence, and karma.
On the other hand, neglecting Mars in the birth chart means controlling and containing our energy, our impulses, our anger, and our violence, which can later become a problem when it explodes, with worse results than if we had channeled our emotions in the moment. Integrating Mars represents taking action, activating, moving forward, and unleashing our inner warrior—that fearless energy that thrives on adversity and challenges. This means simply moving forward, without losing sight of our direction, and working to sustain our progress.

Often, our social environment and upbringing lead us to believe that it’s wrong to get angry, fight, argue, or even simply disagree. If we hide from conflict when it’s necessary, we create a mask where we end up looking like wolves in sheep’s clothing. I wonder: What would happen if we said what we felt in the moment? What would happen if we were true to our emotions? What would happen if we simply surrendered to our impulses?
Yes, our impulse, surely veiled and unconscious, would emerge. Probably not very polished or decorous, but ultimately… real. So, isn’t it better to be honest with ourselves and our emotions and learn and improve our personal and subjective connection, rather than cover it up and hide behind something that must be learned?
The position of our natal Mars in our birth chart will reveal, by zodiac sign, house, and aspect, what energies it embodies, in what areas it thrives, and what support—or lack thereof—it receives from other planets. For example, having Mars in aspect to Saturn could mean feeling limited in our actions, either because we faced many obstacles as children, or because as adults, authority figures constantly tell us we could do things better.
This doesn’t sound pleasant at all, however, knowing this can transform us and turn us into someone who, by striving day after day, creates structure and takes action and makes decisions. Not bad, right?
Do you know where your Mars is? I hope you discover your warrior side and can activate it to manifest your desires.
