The Lunar Nodal Return And Its Relationship With Karma

Lately, there’s been a lot of information available about lunar nodes, eclipses, and karma. This time, we’ve chosen to discuss this topic, hoping to shed some light on these subjects that can sometimes be a bit overwhelming. Below is a helpful guide to understanding and learning.

The nodes, also called lunar nodes, are mathematical points obtained from the connections between the Moon‘s orbit around the Earth and the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. These points are known as the North Node, or node of good karma or dharma; and the South Node, or node of bad karma or simply karma . These nodes always move in pairs, occurring together in complementary opposite signs. In our birth chart, they indicate, on the one hand, karmically, energy that we should release and let go of, which we have already learned—that is the South Node. On the other hand, they indicate energy that we should karmically integrate for our evolution—that is the North Node.

The word karma etymologically means “chain,” meaning that when we experience what we call karmic events, we feel as though events or situations occur whose effects we clearly see, yet we don’t understand their reason or their connection to us. For example, when we say, “The same thing always happens to me with my jobs,” or “The same thing always happens to me with my partners,” we have a sense of repetition that we can’t explain, that we don’t understand. In other words, karma mobilizes unconscious energy, and by definition, the unconscious is karmic; that is, there is something within me that is mine but that I am unaware of, and that at some point controls and governs me beyond my will.

Now, if what I have to learn is karmic, that is, unconscious, how do I know what I need to analyze? In other words, where will the learning come from?

The answer to this question lies in the placement of the nodes in our birth chart. There we will find information about what destiny this veiled but very important information holds for us in our birth chart.

In this sense, much is said about the nodes and karma. People talk about other lives, past lives, how whatever happens to me is related to what happened in another incarnation, and so on. I respect these theories, but I disagree on one point: if the nodes are lunar and the moon is the most intimate and personal luminary we have, perhaps this karmic debt we have to settle on one hand and integrate on the other has more to do with this life and this unconscious mind than whether in another life I was Mother Teresa or the worst of demons. Perhaps the lesson of our nodes in our chart has more to do with something very intimate and personal.

Transiting nodes spend approximately a year and a half in a given sign, meaning that every eighteen years they return to their original position, stirring up and reawakening the natal energy we need to learn and process. It is very important to know the original position of our nodes by house and sign, and to see if there are planets aspecting them in an enabling or limiting way—as this will reveal much about these lessons.

In these nodal returns, we might relive childhood scenes and memories from the past that we thought we’d left behind. Or there could also be a kind of return of the ‘living dead,’ where former partners or relationships reappear, bringing unresolved issues we thought were in the past. Of course, if we’re astrologically warned about this, we shouldn’t despair. Instead, we should ask ourselves why things are returning and what meaning this has for us.

The worst thing we could do in these situations is to ignore the lesson and project this onto others by disengaging from the process and whatever is happening. In one way or another, everything that happens in our lives is connected to us, and we can always do something to get involved and take responsibility. It’s true that sometimes it can be clearer and more obvious, while other times it can be more unfair. But in all cases, we must heed the call—even if it’s just to open the windows and finally exorcise our demons.
