Relationships Are Not a Coincidence - Astrological Synastry Proves It

Most people today are familiar with the concept of a birth chart and, to a greater or lesser extent, are aware that it is a map whose understanding serves as a guide for personal growth and leading a balanced life. What fewer people know about is synastry.

Synastry is an astrological technique that involves calculating the aspects between the birth charts of two people. This interpretation provides valuable information about compatibility, revealing areas where two people are unlikely to understand each other and areas where they might.

The most important aspect of synastry is that, in addition to its informative nature, it’s a powerful tool for improving our relationships. It’s interesting when, upon calculating the synastry of certain couples, the ways in which they complement each other become so obvious. The most dynamic relationships aren’t those where “like” seeks “like,” but rather those where “different” seeks “different.” These are the kinds of relationships where, if they manage to stay together, over the years it becomes clear that both people have evolved and improved in different areas of their lives with each other’s support.

For example, the first thing people usually look at when searching for complementarity is whether either person is missing an element in their birth chart. That is, we often find charts with no planets in water or fire signs; in those cases, we say that the person lacks water or fire. Well, it’s very common to find that the partner has a lot of the element the other person lacks. This happens because we are attracted to the skills and aptitudes we feel we don’t possess as strongly. Also, from a more metaphysical perspective, everyone in your life is there to facilitate your learning; therefore, you can only acquire knowledge of the element that is absent from your chart through someone who has mastered it.

Within synastry, it’s also very important to consider the compatibility of each person’s Moon, Venus, and Mars, and the aspects they form with each other. Ideally, these planets should be in harmonious aspects. In my personal and professional opinion, the Moon is the planet of love, far more so than Venus.

The moon governs how we like to be loved and how we love others, the expectations we have of the other person in the emotional realm, and ultimately, how we express our emotions. When two people’s moons are in trine, it indicates that both moons are in signs of the same element, so the two people communicate their emotions similarly and have more or less the same emotional needs. For example, a fire moon needs activity and variety; they will show their love to their partner by making different plans and demonstrating how excited they are to try new things together. In contrast, an air moon needs to be verbally told that they are loved and also needs to express that love—what stimulates them is a good conversation and knowing that they share similar ways of thinking, rather than so much action or adventure, so to speak.

Another indicator often observed in synastry is that we tend to be attracted to people whose ascendant or midheaven is located on a part of our chart that we reject or haven’t fully integrated—a part of our chart that forms part of our shadow. This is because the people with whom we have the closest relationships are precisely those who serve as a mirror to our darkest or most repressed aspects.

For example, if you are someone who represses the energy of your natal Jupiter, then someone comes along whose ascendant is located where your Jupiter is, and there’s an immediate attraction. What you see in that person is actually within you; you just don’t know it or you reject it. That person, by having it on their ascendant, externalizes that energy that is repressed or unconscious for you. In short, such a person may allow you to discover parts of yourself that you would never have known otherwise. Synastry is truly fascinating.
