Pluto - Turning Darkness Into Light

The Power In The Shadows

Pluto represents the power to transform ourselves from our essence without abandoning it. Pluto’s energy is intensely emotional and profound; it presses from within and pushes us to delve into the depths of experience as if our lives depended on it. It is no wonder, then, that Plutonian experiences can be unsettling due to their emotional intensity, their compulsive nature, and the powerful energy they generate.

The planet Pluto rules the sign of Scorpio, which has its analogous correspondence in the 8th House. Those who have their Ascendant, Sun, or other significant planets in Scorpio will participate in the same energy and processes attributed to Pluto. Likewise, an 8th House with important planets will give rise to experiences related to Pluto’s meanings. In short, the energetic qualities represented by Pluto can also be applied to those who have a significant Scorpio sign or 8th House in their birth chart.

The energies symbolized by Pluto reside in the realm of the unconscious and are inaccessible to the rational mind. We can recognize them in their expression and feel their intense, subterranean emotional power, but we cannot control their manifestations or explain them logically. However, it is possible to channel these energies positively, provided we develop a level of awareness that allows us to listen to them and give them a direction and meaning consistent with their transformative function.

In cases where Pluto has a prominent position in the birth chart, it is likely that a more or less permanent state of restlessness or inner tension will be experienced, which can lead to anxiety, obsessive experiences, or depressive states, unless the Plutonian energy is channeled appropriately. On the other hand, whether or not it has a prominent position, Pluto’s transits will bring repressed feelings to the surface and confront us with intense regenerative processes in which we must let go of everything that prevents us from evolving.

There are several positions of Pluto in a birth chart that can be considered significant, but generally, the most important placements correspond to exact aspects of Pluto with the Ascendant or the Sun. Aspects to the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars are also of great importance. Pluto’s influence will be especially intense if it forms a conjunction, but all other aspects, whether harmonious or inharmonious, will also have a significant transformative effect on the individual.

Pluto’s transformations are often accompanied by periods of crisis that are particularly intense and dramatic, but conversely, it is also Plutonian energy that provides us with greater strength and the capacity to emerge regenerated and strengthened after such crises. Obviously, other planets can signify crises, but those associated with Pluto are clearly recognizable by their emotional compulsiveness and the inescapable nature that colors the ongoing action.

The intensity of Plutonian processes is directly related to their ability to penetrate the core of experience and “touch the wound.” This penetrating power also operates on oneself, and when it does, the gaze reaches the darkest corners of one’s own psyche where our inner beast lurks . And just as in legends of dragons and fearsome beings that stalk in shadowy places, we must confront the hidden forces in the shadows to discover Pluto’s power and channel its energy in a positive way.

The Scorpion And The Frog

When Pluto is active, it awakens primal feelings and powerful emotions that reside deep within us and struggle to surface. The fear that these energies will erupt uncontrollably leads us to exert a tight grip on them. But the various emotional experiences that accumulate increase the inner pressure until it becomes impossible to contain. It is then that we observe someone who is usually composed and kind exploding volcanically, wreaking havoc around them in an uncontrolled and destructive manner. However, there are also other Plutonian manifestations that are worth learning to recognize.

With Pluto, everything that remains unexpressed festers inside , and the accumulated negative emotions become toxic, leading to self-destructive processes that can manifest as depression, illness, or various psychosomatic symptoms. We also observe that those with a powerful but unrecognized Pluto unconsciously radiate a tense energy that is perceived by those around them as threatening or dangerous. As a result, the Plutonian individual senses that others instinctively avoid them and distance themselves, which only fuels a deep-seated resentment of the rejection and misunderstanding they experience.

Sometimes, inner turmoil is projected onto those closest to us through irrational accusations, manipulative blame, or more or less subtle emotional blackmail. It can also happen that a person projects their resentment by provoking situations that awaken anger or violence in others, thus justifying vehement and aggressive reactions that temporarily relieve unbearable internal pressure. These virulent outbursts may be liberating at first and even dramatically exciting, but they often backfire, leaving the individual bewildered and facing the devastating consequences they have caused. We see, then, that in its various forms, the instinctive and compulsive nature of this force erupts, devoid of all logic or personal control. An ancient fable, attributed to Aesop (600 BC), serves as a metaphor to describe this Pluto and Scorpio aspect:

In the telling of this fable, a scorpion asks a frog to help him cross the river, promising not to harm her, saying: “I wish to cross the river, but I do not know how to swim. Please, sister frog, take me to the other side on your back.”

The frog, who had learned much from hardship and disappointment during her long life, replied immediately: “Carry you on my back? Not a chance! I know you well enough to know that if I’m near you, you’ll inject me with your lethal venom and I’ll die!” The scorpion retorted: “Don’t talk nonsense, I’m not going to sting you. If I did, you would sink into the water and I, who can’t swim, would drown.”

The frog initially refused, but was convinced by the scorpion’s irrefutable logic and finally agreed, climbing onto its back. But when they were halfway down, the frog felt a sharp pain and sensed the poison spreading throughout its body. As they both sank, the frog incredulously asked the scorpion, “How could you do such a thing? Now we’ll both die!” To which the scorpion replied, “I couldn’t help it; it’s my nature.”

A fable can have various interpretations, but we can imagine that the growing tension that accumulated in the scorpion as it found itself at the mercy of a frog in the middle of a river, triggered the deadly sting when it could no longer bear it… Regardless of whether we can make other parallel readings of this fable, it is illustrative of those inevitable discharges of Pluto when internal tension overwhelms any attempt at control.

Creative Expression

Pluto presents the paradox that while striving to retain what’s inside, it also feels the need to release and expel the emotions stirring within. This dichotomy between holding on and letting go further intensifies a state of emotional tension that can only be resolved through a conscious effort in which the individual takes responsibility for that energy and offers it a constructive, or at least socially acceptable, outlet.

Pluto operates from the realm of shadow, and to bring it into the light, we must provide it with a creative outlet that helps transform and positively express accumulated energies. Plutonian creative expression should be understood as a power that reshapes what lies within , potentially using artistic expression, a professional activity, a therapeutic process, or a motivating personal, social, or spiritual project as its medium. Pluto is also related to libidinal energy; therefore, a creative sexuality guided by affectionate feelings will be especially suitable for the expression of this planet.

If none of the above options seem viable, it will still be essential to release excess inner tension through physical exercise, dancing, shouting, gardening, or anything else that comes to mind. The idea is to “go from being a volcano about to erupt to being a pressure cooker with the valve releasing the excess pressure .” Obviously, if, as mentioned before, we channel all that inner strength through something that motivates us, the experience and expression of that energy will become creative and rewarding, and there will no longer be a need to relieve the pressure through cathartic activities.

Whatever its intensity or form of expression, recognizing and accepting Pluto within ourselves is essential to managing it and living a meaningful life, without succumbing to self-destructive episodes. It’s also important to pay attention to the various forms Plutonian energy takes in the people we interact with, to avoid becoming the frog in the fable… In any case, if we detect negative Plutonian manifestations in those around us, it’s beneficial to remember the words of Philo of Alexandria (25 BC–50 AD):

“ Be kind to the people you meet,

because they are all fighting a great battle .”

Superior Function

Pluto symbolizes the death of the ego as an initiatory process that opens the doors to a higher dimension. Pluto’s function is to free us from the desires and attachments that bind us to the material world, in order to connect us with a transcendent spiritual goal. We can feel it as an invisible force that pushes us to connect with the hidden and powerful energies of our being so that we can regenerate our baser aspects and thus reach higher states of consciousness. In this process, far from escaping it, it will be essential to become aware of our ephemeral existence and embrace the presence of death as an integral part of life.

But Pluto doesn’t only refer to physical death, but also to any process of dying while still alive, understood as something that ends and that we must let go of, whether it be a romantic relationship, a radical change of profession or residence, material possessions, or anything else. Thus, Pluto pressures us to eliminate what no longer serves us and blocks our evolution, which includes behavioral patterns we must abandon or emotional attachments we resist letting go of, even though they are harmful.

Dealing with the forces symbolized by Pluto involves accepting our shadow, acknowledging the existence of that dark part of ourselves that we don’t want to see or show to the world, but that we know is there; it also involves confronting the unknown and the fear of death in its various forms. In mythology, the Roman god Pluto replaced the Greek Hades, god of the underworld, in whose realm lay the abode of the dead and where monsters and titans were trapped. We cannot deny that it is a disturbing realm, but, as in mythological tales, descending into Pluto’s dark realm is a heroic act whose reward will be discovering the secret of life and death, and the path to the Light.
