Discovering 8th House in Astrology

The Eighth House is in many ways the most mysterious and unsettling of all the houses, as it relates to matters beyond our control that have a profound transformative effect on our lives. The archetypal themes associated with the Eighth House are sexuality and death, but this house also relates to hidden forces, emotional crises, and shared energies, among other things. It’s important to note that the planets located in the Eighth House are not visible and manifest in the subterranean passageways of consciousness, so we must develop our capacity for listening to identify their needs and channel their energies appropriately.

The sexuality represented by the 8th House is more emotional than physical, describing that powerful impulse to unite with the other in an experience that transcends duality. In this experience, the individual ego, as a separate self, dies, which is why some traditions have ritualized sexuality through specific practices to foster a spiritual state of Oneness with the All. However, instinctive impulses and the pursuit of pleasure often overshadow the transcendent implications of the sexual experience, as other biological, affective, psychological, and emotional factors also come into play, expressed in varying degrees. This gives rise to multiple possibilities, ranging from compulsive and primal sexuality to loving and spiritual sexuality, with all the imaginable intermediate stages.

Therefore, to study sexuality at its different levels, in addition to the 8th House, it will be necessary to consider other factors such as Mars, Venus, and the 5th House, related to desire, attraction, and eroticism, as well as the sign of Scorpio with its ruling planet Pluto, to obtain additional information about the transpersonal potential of sexual experience. Becoming aware of the transcendent energies activated in the sexual experience can elevate or even spiritualize it, without relinquishing its most pleasurable or exciting aspects.

The Eighth House also describes the circumstances surrounding death and how we cope with it. For most people, the inevitability of death raises existential questions and awakens a fear of the unknown upon leaving the physical body. The fear of death is related to the fear of life, as it is part of it, and whether it is our own death or the death of loved ones, how we confront the subject of death will largely define how we live.

The capacity to accept death, understood as a transformation or change of state, will be conditioned by our spiritual beliefs, as well as by our degree of attachment to the material world. In this sense, it is likely that there will be a greater ease in accepting physical death when the birth chart is dominated by Water and/or Fire signs, planets in the 9th and/or 12th houses, or when Jupiter and/or Neptune are prominent. In any case, there may be other astrological factors and significators that support or hinder this capacity for acceptance.

But the 8th House doesn’t only represent physical death; it also refers to the regenerative processes of death and rebirth in life, in which we are forced to abandon old patterns of behavior and emotional attachments of all kinds to make room for the birth of something new. This can generate crises, fears, and resistance, and it will be necessary to confront the insecurities buried deep within our existence in order to die while still alive and be reborn with a renewed identity.

Similarly, the 8th House reveals our perception of intangible energies to which we are most sensitive. When we perceive an energy outside ourselves that is present in our 8th House, we resonate with that energy, triggering an unconscious response. In these situations, the sign, ruling planet, and planets in the 8th House will provide clues. For example, if the cusp of the 8th House is in Leo, we are likely to perceive other people’s need for attention, which will stir up conflicting feelings regarding our own repressed need to be the center of attention. If Mars is in the 8th House, we will perceive aggression in others, which can awaken in us feelings of fight or flight related to aggressive impulses. And so on with any sign or planet, based on their respective meanings.
