ORIGIN OF THE TITLE OF OUR LADY OF EXILE
The designation of the Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Exile represents the Holy Family’s escape to Egypt. This title received by Mary has a biblical foundation: in the Gospel of Matthew (Matt. 2: 13-14) it says that after the departure of the Magi, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: “Rise, take the boy. , his mother and flees to Egypt; stay there until I tell you, because Herod seeks the boy to kill him. ”So Joseph got up, took Mary and Jesus by the hand, and departed for Egypt.
This Our Lady is venerated in Italy as the “Madonna degli Emigrati”, patron of those who were forced to leave their homeland to take refuge or to seek work abroad.
