Psalm 54 Meaning and Commentary

Behold, God is the one who helps me. If we are for Him, He is for us; and if He is for us, we have nothing to fear. Every creature is for us what God makes it to be, no more. The Lord will save his people at the opportune moment and meanwhile sustains and tolerates them, so that the spirit that he has made does not faint. There is truth in God’s threats and in his promises; unrepentant sinners will find it so at their own expense.

David’s present release was an earnest of his later release. He speaks of completing his deliverance as a done deal, though many tribulations still lay ahead; because having God’s promise felt as safe as if it was already done. The Lord would deliver him from all his tribulations. May he help us to carry our crosses without worrying and, in the long run, lead us to share your victories and glory. Christians should never tolerate the cease of the voice of praise and thanksgiving in the Church of the redeemed.
