Psalm 27 Meaning

The meaning of Psalm 27 is very interesting, it explains how to live a fuller life, it gives us advice on how God supplies our needs. May God become an essential part of our lives and we find in his word and faith a reason to have a fuller life.

Psalm 27 was written by David, the most famous king of Israel. But David faced many dangers before he became a king. He suffered several assassination attempts, lived as an outlaw, pursued armies and fought many battles. His life was in constant threat, but David felt safe.

David trusted God. He knew that God was with him and protected him at all times. That’s why he wrote Psalm 27.

Psalm 27 verse 1-3 Commentary: The reason for our confidence

The Lord is my light and my salvation;
Who will I fear?
The Lord is the bulwark of my life;
Who can intimidate me?
When the wicked advance against me
to devour my flesh,
when my enemies and adversaries attack me, it
is they who stumble and fall.
Even when an army besieges me,
my heart will not fear;
Even when a war breaks out against me,
I will maintain trust.
(Psalm 27: 1-3)

David faced very great dangers that would be difficult for anyone else to overcome. However, he knew that God is much greater than any threat. In the first verses of this Psalm we see the total confidence that David had in God, fruit of the experiences of his life. He had experienced the saving power of God, his help and care at times of great risk. David had lived great moments with God, so his confidence in Him was absolute. He knew that God would help him in the midst of any situation.

Sometimes we can feel that the problems we face are impossible to solve. Everything seems to be against us. But we have God, his presence, his help, and we should not be afraid. Nothing is impossible for God. When God is with us we can face armies with confidence.

Psalm 27 verse 4-6 Commentary: In God we have a safe place

I ask only one thing from the Lord,
and that is the only thing I pursue:
to live in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to contemplate the beauty of the Lord
and to recharge myself in His temple.
Because in the day of affliction
He will protect me,
and He will set me up on a rock.
It will make me prevail
against the enemies that surround me;
I will offer sacrifices of praise in His temple
and sing psalms to the Lord.
(Psalm 27:4-6)

When the hour of hardship came David took refuge in the presence of God. The temple represented their presence where everyone could approach and receive blessings. It was there that David found victory.

Being before God gives peace and relief in the hardest moments of life. There is nothing else that can give us such profound peace. When it costs us to face the world and its challenges we can run to God and find the strength we need to overcome all the problems.

Psalm 27 verse 7-12 Commentary: God hears our cry

Hear, Lord, my voice when I cry to you;
have pity on me and answer me.
The heart says to me: «Seek his face!»
And I, Lord, your face I seek.
Do not hide from me;
do not reject, in your anger, this servant of yours,
because you have been my help.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
O God of my salvation.
Even if my father and mother abandon me,
the Lord will receive me in His arms.
Guide me, Lord, in your way;
direct me on the path of righteousness,
for the sake of those who lie in wait for me.
Do not give me up at the whim of my adversaries,
for when false witnesses who breathe violence
rise up against me.
(Psalm 27: 7-12)

Up to here it seemed that David only experienced times of victory and joy. Now we see that he also had struggles but knew the secret to regain confidence in God: prayer. David cried out to God when he felt insecure or afraid. He knew he could not do anything on his own. He needed God, to feel his presence, to see his face. No one else could save him. We all feel insecure at times. When this happens we need to cry out to God for help, go before Him in prayer. God always listens to those who place their trust in Him. He does not abandon us in our hour of need.

Psalm 27 verse 13-14 Commentary: God, our certainty and encouragement

But one thing I am sure of:
I must see the goodness of the Lord
in this land of the living.
Put your hope in the Lord;
have courage, take courage;
Put your hope in the Lord!
(Psalm 27: 13-14)

David had a certainty. No matter how many difficulties came into his life he knew he would see again the goodness of God in his life. In the midst of difficult circumstances he knew that God would bring good things to his life. That is why the Psalm ends by encouraging its hearers (each one of us) to put their hope in God. He ends up giving a word of encouragement, saying that we can always trust God because He never fails.

    For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 1Timothy 2:3-6 Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be save...
