Psalm 19 Meaning
The meaning of Psalm 19 is very interesting, it shows us several basic principles on which the manifestations towards God are based. In them we can find, for example, the manifestations dedicated to our Lord such as: the sample of the Glory of God, his Grace and finally the communication with our God.
Psalm 19 Commentary
Let’s open our Bible to the book of Psalms. It is up to us to study Psalm 19 .
According to the superscript of this psalm, the author is David.
In this precious psalm we find a triple manifestation of God to humanity.
First of all, God manifests Himself to humanity through creation.
Psalm 19: 1-6 says:
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament announces the work of his hands. One day he utters word to day, and night to night he declares wisdom. There is no language, no words. His voice is not heard. His voice is gone out through all the earth, and his words to the ends of the world. In them he has made a tabernacle for the sun; way. From one end of the heavens is its exit, and its course to the end of them; and there is nothing to hide from its heat. “
Creation is a wordless message to all humanity. This is what the word of God refers to when in this psalm it says: The heavens count, or perhaps better, they declare the glory or the greatness, or the majesty of God. The firmament also does its thing by announcing that it was made by the hands of God. The message is amazing. Just think of the vastness of the universe.
If we could travel at the speed of light, every second we would travel exactly 300,000 kilometers from a certain point in the universe. But take that into account, even at this fantastic speed, for now impossible to be reached, it would take us ten billion years to reach the farthest star that is seen with a telescope, but this star is far from what is known to exist beyond, although it is not seen with the farthest powerful telescopes.
In fact, astronomers think that the universe has no limits, that is, it extends to infinity, and all that space is full of celestial bodies. Think of the stars and other celestial bodies. With the naked eye and on a clear night, our eyes perceive around 5,000 stars. If we help ourselves with a small telescope, we will be able to perceive about two million stars.
If we could scan the sky with the Mount Palomar telescope, we could see billions, not only stars but galaxies.
To give you an idea of how huge the sky is, consider these facts that I read in a book: If it cost only 10 cents to travel 1000 miles through the universe, it would cost us 2 dollars and 38 cents to travel to the moon. A trip to the sun would be a little more expensive because it would cost $ 930, but a trip to the nearest star, It would cost us nothing more and nothing less than 260 million dollars. This is how enormous the distances from one star to another are and there are millions of millions of them in the universe. That is why the Bible says that the heavens declare the glory of God and the firmament announces the work of his hands.
But do you know what? If creation is this big, bigger must be the Creator.
That is what the psalmist is essentially saying. The creation not only has impressive dimensions but also a striking design. There he has one day emitting word to another day to produce an incessant day-night-day cycle. There you have the sun shedding its light and warmth so vital for life and for nature on earth. All of this is a wordless message from God to humanity. Just by looking at the sky, any human being would have to recognize that there must be a higher being who has brought all of this into existence.
But sadly, there are not a few who voluntarily close their ears to God’s wordless message to humanity through creation and to their own ruin fabricate their own way of understanding the universe apart from God. This is exactly where atheism supports everything.
Second, Psalm 19 tells us of God’s manifestation to humanity through his word.
Psalm 19: 7-10 says:
“The law of Jehovah is perfect, converting the soul; Jehovah’s testimony is faithful, making the simple wise. The Jehovah’s commandments are right, rejoicing the heart; Jehovah’s commandment It is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true, all righteous. They are more to be desired than gold, and more than much fine gold; and that the one that distills from the honeycomb “
Creation cries out that God exists and that God is powerful. But that is not enough for man to have contact with God. God needs to manifest himself to man in a more personal and precise way. That is exactly what we have in the word of God. The word of God is presented by David in various ways, all of them with beautiful meaning. It is the law of the Lord, it is the testimony of the Lord, it is the commandments of the Lord, it is the commandment of the Lord, it is the fear of the Lord, and it is the judgments of the Lord.
All of this is the word of God. But we also find some qualifiers of the word of God.
It is perfect, it is faithful, it is straight, it is pure, it is clean, it is true, it is fair. We also find the effect of the word of God in the lives of those who receive it. It converts the soul, makes the simple wise, rejoices the heart, enlightens the eyes, and remains forever. Looking at all this, the psalmist gives us his personal testimony of what the word of God is for him. He says that it is more desirable than gold, but not just any gold, but fine gold.
This is how David appreciated the word of God. For David, God’s word was also sweeter than honey, but not just any honey, but that which has just been distilled from the honeycomb. When man hears God’s message through creation, he is ready to hear God’s message through his word. When that happens, what will be the result?
This is where the third manifestation of God to humanity comes in, it is through transformed lives.
Psalm 19: 11-14 says:
“Your servant is also warned by them; in keeping them there is great reward. Who can understand his own errors? Deliver me from those who are hidden from me. Preserve your servant also from arrogance; lord it over me; then shall I be upright, and clean from great rebellion. Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing before you, O Lord, my rock, and my redeemer.”
A person can recognize that God exists and that He is powerful just by looking at the sky. That same person may even recognize that God has spoken the Bible through his word, but despite that, that person does not yet have a personal relationship with God. He lacks the testimony of God in his own heart. This is a voluntary decision in every human being. David decided to have that testimony in his own heart and as a result, his life was transformed. His life became a manifestation of what God is capable of in a person who submits to him.
David was admonished, rewarded, corrected, protected, and made whole. David’s life then became a wordless message that testified to the reality of God. The same is today, each life transformed by the power of God is a strong testimony in favor of the reality of God. God is not just an idea, but something real. It all started with the God of creation who later manifested himself as the God of the word and ends up being the God who transforms the lives of those who receive it. I challenge you to know and trust that God. For that, all you have to do is receive Christ as your personal Savior. If you haven’t done it before, do it today.
