Psalm 14 Commentary
When the Bible speaks of a foolish person, it should not be understood in the sense of someone who is persevering in achieving something, nor in the sense that someone has some degree of mental deficiency. A fool, biblically speaking, means someone who is morally corrupt. We make this precision because in today’s Bible study, we are going to talk about fools. To do this, let’s open our Bible to Psalm 14.
This psalm, like some previous ones, has an overwriting in which we read the following:
To the main musician. Psalm of David.
Here again, we have instructions for the musician leading the worship. The lyrics of this psalm had been written by David. Regarding the content of the psalm, we find the proclamation of the fool, the practice of the fool, the perversion of the fool, and the danger of the fool. Let’s consider the psalm in this order.
First, the proclamation of the fool.
In the first part of verse 1 we read: “The fool says in his heart: There is no God.”
This is the fool’s declaration of faith. He is totally convinced with all his heart that there is no God. How did you get to that conclusion? Well, simply reasoning, thinking, meditating in your heart.
But there we have a problem because the word of God says in Jeremiah 17: 9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and wicked; who can know it?”When man tries to find God based on his own reasoning, he is very likely to end up as a fool, believing that there is no God. What man needs to do in order not to become like the fool is to find God in what God has given to man so that the Bible can be found, in his word.
Puffed up in his own reasoning, the fool says: There is no God. Despite all the evidence that is before the eyes of the fool, the fool refuses to recognize that behind the created there must be a Creator and closing his eyes he says: There is no God.
Armed with this thought, he assumes that everything that exists in the universe is the product of natural laws that have been at work for millions of millions of years. How absurd it is to deny the existence of a Creator. If only we could see how accurate everything He has designed is. Let us take a look only at the earth, so as not to touch what is in the distant stars. Note, for example, that the earth rotates on its axis at a linear speed of approximately 1600 km. per hour, if the earth rotated on its axis at only 160 km. per hour, our days and nights would be ten times longer and our planet would freeze during those long nights and burn up during those long days, making it impossible for vegetation to exist.
If the planet earth were the size of the moon, the force of gravity would be so weak that it could not retain the atmosphere with the air that is vital for the existence of life, but if the planet earth were as big as Jupiter or Saturn , the force of gravity would be so great that any movement on its surface would be impossible.
Think about this, if the earth were as close to the sun as the planet Venus is, the heat from the sun would be unbearable and would make life on this planet impossible. On the other hand, if the earth were as far from the sun as the planet Mars is, the earth would be covered with snow and ice even in the warmest regions.
If the surface of the oceans were half of what it is, the annual amount of rainfall on earth would be only a quarter of what it is now and it would be impossible for there to be abundant vegetation. But if the surface of the oceans were only an eighth more than it is, the amount of annual rainfall would be eight times what it is now, and it would turn the entire earth into a desolate swamp. Who made the earth have the exact dimension, the exact rotational speed, the exact tilt of its axis, the exact proximity to the sun, the exact surface of the oceans, etc., etc.?
It cannot be the work of chance, it must be the work of God, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe.
No wonder the Bible qualifies as fool anyone who does not know this truth and says in his heart: There is no God.
This is the proclamation of the fool. and would make the whole land a desolate swamp. Who made the earth have the exact dimension, the exact rotational speed, the exact tilt of its axis, the exact proximity to the sun, the exact surface of the oceans, etc., etc.? Now let’s look at the fool’s practice. Here we have an inviolable principle in the Bible.
What one believes will inevitably determine what one does. That is why it is important not only to believe that God exists, but to believe in sound doctrine, because bad doctrine will inevitably lead to bad practice. This is the problem with false sects. Of course, since they have bad doctrine, that leads to bad practice. A certain false sect believes that women are saved by bearing the greatest number of children. And do you know what this bad doctrine led to? Well, for the members of that false sect to have as many wives as possible. Do you see the matter? It is no wonder then that we expect a bad practice on the part of the fool we are studying in Psalm 14.
The practice of the fool.
Let’s read the second part of verse 1, it says like this: “They have corrupted themselves, they do abominable works; there is no one who does good”
There you have it, listening friend. As the fool denies the existence of God, which is bad doctrine, behind the fool inevitably comes bad practice. David saw that all the fools had been corrupted, this means that they were morally depraved. In their depravity they did abominable works. None of the fools was willing to do good. This description of the practice of fools inevitably leads me to think about much of what we see in our society today. I know people who see nothing wrong with homosexuality, or lesbianism, or drug addiction, or in drunkenness or in premarital sex or in marital infidelity, or in fraud, etc., etc.
When you talk to them that these things offend God. Their response is: What do I care?
I have nothing to do with God, because I don’t think He exists. Sometimes I even think that the decision to ignore the existence of God is actually the excuse to give free rein to low passions. This is the practice of the fool. When you talk to them that these things offend God. Their response is: What do I care? I have nothing to do with God, because I don’t think He exists. Sometimes I even think that the decision to ignore the existence of God is actually the excuse to give free rein to low passions. This is the practice of the fool. Now let us consider the perversion of the fool. Here we are going to see Jehovah doing a fool’s assessment.
Psalm 14: 2-4 says: “The Lord looked down from heaven upon the sons of men, to see if there were any who understood, who sought God. They have all gone astray, together they have become corrupt; there is no one who does good, there is not even one. All those who do iniquity have no discernment, who devour my people as if they were eating bread, and do not call on the Lord. “
Interesting that God is attentive from heaven to everything that men think and do. It is absurd to think that man can hide from God. The husband who betrays his wife behind her back thinks that his sin will never be known. But Jehovah looked down on it from heaven and one day it will come to light. The public official who receives a bribe thinks that his sin will never be known. But Jehovah looked down on it from heaven and one day it will come to light. The young woman who fell into fornication with her lover, thinks that her sin will never be known, But Jehovah looked down on him and one day it will all come to light.
It is a serious thing, listening friend, to pretend to hide from God. The fool thinks he can do it, but Jehovah looked down from heaven and saw that among men there were none wise enough to seek God. Far from it, all the men went their own way. All men are immersed in the mire of sin.
There is not a single one who does good.
This is a dramatic picture of the spiritual state of humanity without God. Perhaps the fool is the prototype of this society, but the rest of humanity is not very far from what the fool is.
Unfortunately we were all in this situation before God rescued us through salvation in Christ. But God had compassion and love and grace and mercy and sought us out to have a personal relationship with us. Some of us heard his voice calling us and we came to him and through Christ, we left the mire of sin behind and were made children of God. Yes, man does not seek God, in his natural state, but God seeks man and some of us have found him.
After considering the perversion of the fool, let us consider last the danger of the fool. The sad thing about it is that the fool is in danger of being condemned by God but does not realize it.
Psalm 14: 5-7 says: “They trembled with astonishment, for God is with the generation of the righteous. They have mocked the counsel of the poor, but the LORD is their hope. O that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion! When the Lord brings back the captives of his people, Jacob will rejoice, and Israel will rejoice. “
Fools despise the poor and mock the righteous. What they do not know is that Jehovah is the hope of the poor and the righteous. Jehovah is on the side of the poor and on the side of the righteous. Therefore, instead of boasting in their folly, fools should be trembling with fear, because Jehovah is ready to punish them. David ends his psalm with a phrase of worship to Jehovah, trusting that one day Jehovah will administer perfect justice from Zion or Jerusalem. This will be fulfilled during the millennial reign of Christ.
I end with this question, my listener. Are you a fool? Do you want to know? Just look at God’s place in your life. If you think there is no God and live as if there is no God, then you are a fool. But there is still hope for you. If you want to stop being a fool, all you need to do is acknowledge that you are a sinner, acknowledge that you are separated from God by sin, acknowledge that Christ died for you to pay what you are. You owe God for being a sinner, and finally you need to receive Christ as Savior.
