Your arm and leg muscles are becoming momentarily paralyzed while you are in REM mode, which means that even if anything scary occurred to you during a dream, there wouldn’t be a natural reaction by your limbs as there would have been if you would have been faced by such stimulation in waking life. When you are in REM mode, however, your arm and leg musculature become temporarily paralyzed.
