First, perhaps we should consider the number of mistakes two Rams can make when they are closely associated. It is enormous. Simply enormous. The number of rights can also be overwhelming, and since Rams often feel compelled to impulsively dive headfirst into puddles (Aries always charges headfirst), they won’t feel so alone when they get stuck upside down in the mud, with the company of a kindred spirit. When these two strong personalities first mix their particular auras, they clear the ground and begin the countdown to the explosion, which usually consists of a spontaneous explosion of empathy. It is truly exhilarating to discover a positive, enthusiastic and open personality, after having to put up with all those boring party poopers… the taciturn and mean-spirited ones, and especially those cold, unapproachable individuals who ignore you when all you want to do is be friendly. No wonder there is such an instant outpouring of mutual admiration! Both Rams will feel wonderfully relieved that the other does not take a cocky attitude toward such things as extravagance, impulsive behavior, rash speech, and lateness to appointments. Not only that, they will now have someone who will accompany them to the dentist without accusing them of “cowardice.”
Most Arians hate two things equally: a) going to the dentist, and b) having their picture taken “candidly” or otherwise. Sitting still in their seats, posing, while the photographer adjusts the studio lights annoys them almost as much as having a tooth pulled or a root canal; they are more concerned with looking good at such times. They are usually inordinately concerned about their image and a bit vain. (Astrologically, Aries rules physical appearance.) The Ram’s fear of the dentist does not, however, diminish his courage. Mars supplies these people with all the courage they need, and a little more on the side whenever they ask for it, even without much advance preparation. Their fear of the dentist is an isolated trauma, and should not be interpreted as a testimony that Rams are cowards. They simply do not like anyone messing with their heads. This usually includes drugs. This includes the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth—and the brain, too, which means you don’t mess with their ideas, either. For example, most Aries women dislike going to beauty salons. The beauty experts are very pushy, and they simply won’t do your hair the way you ask them to, or they won’t part it where you ask them to. After all, it’s not their hair, it’s yours, but if you give them an inch, they’ll cut it off. An Aries woman may cut her hair drastically, leaving it too short or uneven, which she’ll regret later—but if someone else turns her into a shorn sheep, she’ll be furious. Just as furious as she would be with herself. (Aries is not at all selective about anger.)
Ram girls prefer to take the extra trouble of washing their hair at home rather than put up with a hairdresser who thinks she owns their heads. Aries’ sensitivity about all things head-related is very pronounced indeed. You would be sensitive, too, if you had a dozen or so scars scattered across your head and face that you began collecting in childhood from butting heads (and people). As for the “extra work” of doing something for themselves, this is not a big deal. Rams almost never mind taking on “extra work” for themselves or others. When it comes to others, the extra work is the product of the generous impulse of Mars-ruled souls who tend to give more than is necessary of their time, money, love, loyalty, and everything else. When it comes to themselves, they usually put the extra work on themselves because it encourages problems that would not exist if they left everything as is. The Ram considers the maxim that “the best is the enemy of the good” to be nonsense. Why should he settle for “the good”? What kind of goal is this when, with a little effort, the good can be transformed into the better? (Aries never thinks that the good can be transformed into the worse.)
Unless one or both of the Rams have a Capricorn, Taurus, or Cancer Moon or Ascendant sign, they will probably find it easy to borrow money from each other, and it is difficult for either of them to intemperately demand prompt repayment—which creates another area of empathy between the two. They both proceed uprightly in all walks of life, including the financial one. It never occurs to them to cheat anyone. In fact, they don’t know how to do so. They may occasionally overestimate their ability to repay, or even forget about a debt when they are engaged in something new and very exciting that consumes all their attention, but they are never dishonest, and they are never devious. Nothing hurts and angers a Ram more than being unfairly distrusted or suspected. The typical Aries man or woman would be mortified to disappoint anyone to whom they have given their word, and this includes creditors. Arians may be forgetful or late, but they will eventually pay off all their debts in full, often in excess… because Rams are not overly suspicious or cautious when it comes to spending, so they are easily sold and overcharged. No matter. Mars figures that when money disappears, more will appear, one way or another. (Does a newborn worry about where the next dry diaper or bottle of milk will come from? Of course not. It will magically appear when needed. Everyone knows that!)
Each Aries person involved in this 1-1 Sun Sign Pattern partnership will feel touchingly grateful for the other’s trust. Not only will the two Rams almost always instinctively trust each other, but they will not take advantage of each other, and if you think about how they are generally treated by the rest of the world, this can produce a warm and wonderful feeling. At first it’s all a merry-go-round of bliss between Aries and Aries, but when the pink sugar filaments melt, moments of disillusionment can set in. Do you know what happens when Fire meets Fire? Higher and hotter flames rise. This should foreshadow the possible ramifications of a partnership between two Rams, whether of a business, romantic, friendly or other nature. It could be otherwise, if both were bent on butting heads in the impossible task of breaking each other’s vulnerable but indomitable and unconquerable spirit. Among the more typical extroverted Aries are scattered less common sheep-like ones whose Martian personalities have been sadly pulverized in childhood, and who consequently control their natural exuberance behind a very unnatural introversion. If the two Aries engaged to each other belong to this group, they may not seem capable, outwardly, of provoking each other’s anger, but appearances are deceptive. Somewhere, somehow, they are sure to butt horns.
When Mars clashes with Mars, the result can be full-scale warfare, with heroic and colorful flag-waving. Occasional flare-ups are inevitable when these two live in close daily proximity, with no estrangement to mitigate their partnership. But there will also be some glorious euphoria to offset these depressions. For the most part, Mars’s outspoken and forceful nature will create a current of sympathy between the two Aries. Crises are likely to occur when their respective needs to satisfy self-centered tendencies overlap. Here’s a possible solution to the problem: One Ram can have his way on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and the other rules on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. On Saturdays, they simply engage in battle and let the Ram with the stronger horns win—and heal the loser’s wounds with the instant contrition and tender generosity that are typical of Aries. This is a formula that will work well in most cases, because neither of you will mind being periodically relegated to the background if you know you can take charge again the next day.
It has been said that Aries have personality. True, a capricious personality. But despite the sometimes hostile Martian façade, they sense each other’s desperate need to earn the appreciation and esteem of others. When they come together, they may vie for leadership, but experience will provide some well-deserved lessons. Surely the shock of living with someone—or being close to someone—who is as innocently thoughtless, selfish, and aggressive as oneself will soften any bulldozing Ram, even if some scars remain as testimony to the lessons of living together thus learned. The Aries heart always has more scars than the Rams openly display or discuss. Both will need to understand that Aries is the newborn of the Zodiac, symbolizing the dawning of personality awareness, or the Dawn. Aries represents the East, the diurnal forces, and this is the reason why most of them fight so vigorously against sleep, tranquility, rest and resignation to fate.
The negative intrusion of criticism or pessimism, no matter how large, darkens the Ram’s “eastern” horizon and considerably crushes the Aries spirit, especially when it is another Ram who vigorously crushes innocence and nascent faith. However, temporary resentment rarely lasts until it becomes a permanent grudge, because Aries nurtures a childlike faith that the problem can somehow be solved and that the relationship can be mended each time it breaks down. It seems inconceivable to the Ram that a specific situation could be any different from how he (or she) sees it at a given moment. However, no one (except a Sagittarius and a Gemini) can more quickly correct a wrong approach, or more thoroughly bury yesterday’s misfortune and grievance, than an Aries man, woman or child who is treated with gentleness. For an Aries of either sex, or of any chronological age (excepting the presence of a more pessimistic lunar sign and/or ascendant), each dawn brings a new pact of resurrection… the resurrection of an idea, an objective or a friendship that has gone astray. Why look back, or worry about the past and the irremediable, when today is so full of promise?
The problem is that while Rams need to be treated gently, they are not inclined to treat themselves (or anyone else) gently. Arians don’t seem to grasp the deeper meaning of the Golden Rule. They understand, and even embody, its generosity and mercy, but they are unable to fully interpret what it means to treat others with the same tenderness with which they themselves need to be treated. They don’t let anyone push them around, push them around, or coerce them, not even those who are obviously stronger than them, and certainly not other Aries. (A typical Aries would literally confront a criminal who pointed a loaded pistol at him and recklessly shoot back.) Rams expect others to comply with their wishes and obey their orders without question, as quickly as possible (unless the moderating influence of several planets or the signs Pisces or Libra are at play in their horoscope). This is the Mars instinct for rebellion. In some Mars-ruled men, women, and children, the desire to take the initiative and to lead is so strong that they sometimes interpret even a cordial suggestion, not to mention the vehement commands of a relative, neighbor, friend, partner, spouse, or lover born under the same unconsciously imperative Sun sign, as an unbearable intrusion.
If one of the two Aries is stronger by virtue of planetary positions at birth (not wiser and more patient, which would be beneficial, but stronger), the result of the partnership could be the gradual transformation of the “weaker” Ram into a neurotic sheep, almost constantly and pathetically apologizing for his very existence… or rationalizing his every word and action for fear of offending or being misunderstood. This is a very sad situation, because to see the proud strength of a spirited astrological “animal” like the Ram reduced to weakness and whining, while he constantly strives to appease the more dominant personality even though he is internally frustrated and emotionally repressed, is contrary to the first law of astrology: Be true to the essence of your own Sun sign, or prepare to lose the powerful potential that is yours by birthright.
It is never easy for two Rams to coexist in placid harmony (although it can be undeniably exciting!). One happy chance is that both will usually be inclined to forgive and forget all but the cruelest of encounters. As for the latter, great effort will have to be made to avoid them, because Aries will remember them for a long time… for the same reason that newborn babies, who instantly forget, with a confident smile, the most common injuries and pains, will have to remember, with unconscious terror, the deepest experiences of traumatic rejection… sometimes forever. Two Rams will have to try to control their tendency to attack each other while they are still exasperated. They will strike a blow, soon after experience a flash of remorse for their hasty cruelty, and then impulsively try to compensate for their anger with reciprocal displays of affection, or with an exorbitant gift that will serve as a peace pledge. By the way, gifts are the Ram’s device for saying “I like you” or “I love you” – and occasionally they give them to say, ruefully, “I’m sorry.” But Aries never give gifts to “buy friendship.” Mars-ruled people despise the idea of resorting to buying things to get what they want (they’re used to demanding it). So they abhor such false insinuations or accusations, and are deeply offended by them as well. Aries gifts always come from the heart, and are given as a frank and honest testimony of good will. However, those who are so materialistic that they don’t understand that a gift can be given without ulterior motives (since this is their own pattern of behavior, they believe that everyone is the same as them) often misinterpret Aries’ motives.
Fortunately, this is another kind of grievance that two Rams are unlikely to inflict on each other. Every Aries understands the gift-giving syndrome that is part of Mars’ nature (and is only repeated in the other two Fire signs), and so they will generally both give and receive with glee, exchanging gifts. The Ram takes as much delight in receiving a gift as in being able to give one. Knowing that it is just as important to receive graciously as to give generously is part of Aries’ innocent shrewdness. For if no one received happily, there could be no happy giving. Therefore, the typical Ram will react with childlike glee to receiving a “surprise gift,” and two Aries can live permanently bankrupt (but elated and content) because of their mutual desire to express their enthusiasms through gifts. It is never easy for two Rams to coexist in peaceful harmony (although it can be undeniably exciting!). A happy probability is that both will usually be inclined to forgive and forget everything except the cruelest encounters. As for the latter, great effort will have to be made to avoid them, because Aries will remember them for a long time… for the same reason that newborns, who instantly forget, with a confident smile, the most common injuries and pains, will have to remember, with unconscious terror, the deepest experiences of traumatic rejection… sometimes forever.
Throughout the centuries, the Ram has been a sacrificial symbol for spiritually blind, emotionally twisted, and mentally foolish religious fanatics. The Old Testament is filled with gruesome examples of the “holocausts” perpetrated by these misguided “saints.” The patriarch Abraham did not conform at all to the wishes and dictates of “God” when he first declared himself willing to murder his own son to please the Almighty, and then when he “heard” the voice of God grant him a last-minute reprieve and order him to sacrifice a helpless sheep instead. Sadly, Abraham heard only the voice of his own ramblings and not the voice of God. None of our infinitely wise and merciful Co-creators would be so sadistic as to order the murder of children, or the lowest of our animal brothers and sisters, for His own greater glory, making the act a senseless test of faith and obedience. Earth sorely needed the example set by the gentle Nazarene. Jesus, often depicted embracing the “lamb,” used sheep in parable after parable to illustrate love and kindness, and brought the image of the Good Shepherd into the world to rectify the twisted minds of these “servants of God” who, by their cruel animal sacrifices, were unwittingly serving Satan, despite their otherwise pious and humble attitudes. In legends such as Jason and the Golden Fleece, the sad fate of the Ram has been repeated throughout mythology, as well as in Biblical history. The unfortunate Ram, who attempted to cross dangerous seas and rescue a brother and sister from the wicked designs of their jealous stepmother, with great display of courage was unable to prevent the sister from drowning. When he reached the shore and deposited the brother there unharmed, he was thanked by being killed for having allowed the sister to die, despite his desperate efforts to save her.
This is the symbolic fate, in varying degrees and in all kinds of endeavors, of many Aries. Despite their enthusiastic efforts and sincerity of impulse, human Rams are ignored or scorned for their troubles by the very people they have tried to help. The simplicity of intentions and unequivocal behavior of the Aries are not always welcomed by the more cynical people in the world. Thus the union of two Aries can be beneficial if they can help each other from being turned into a “holocaust” or from being slaughtered by the premeditated maneuvers of the more worldly who would take pleasure in “skinning” them. They provide each other with protection from those who would otherwise take advantage of their altruistic instincts. There are always authoritarian individuals who wait for the opportune moment to attack the defenseless. Of course, it’s hard to imagine the exuberant, fiery, and usually outspoken Rams as “helpless” people. But ultimately, they are immensely vulnerable to the actions of those willing to turn their natural naivety and lack of sophistication against them.
In any partnership between two Aries, whether in the family, at the office, or on either side of the bridge of love and friendship, one thing is certain: emotions will periodically boil over and bubble close to the surface. Catullus perfectly described this Sun sign’s attitude toward its own emotional immaturity when he wrote: I hate and I love. Between two Aries, there will be little deception, pretense, or hypocrisy, but neither will there be a great deal of caution, reasoning, or practicality. There will be few neutral elements in this vibration of the 1-1 Sun sign configuration with double participation of Mars. These two beings are capable of reaching the zenith of happiness or consuming themselves in childish displays of anger, resentment, and unscrupulous selfishness. However, they will never fail to understand and comprehend each other’s bright red dreams sprinkled with diamond dust, especially when it comes to dreams that did not materialize, for one reason or another. Perhaps together they can try again. And somehow, maybe, someday… they will succeed. Tenacious dreamers always succeed.
